Are you thinking of how can I say this? Because it is what has exactly what is experienced by me!
I switched from my 7 egg incubator to the Octagon Advance, it is not that I didn’t use my old one but I did that because it is extremely an advanced device that will definitely make you fall in love with. As you will read this review, you will explore about why I am singing praises about this item. The unique features of this device make the Brinsea Octagon 20 to shine among the other Egg Incubators in this range.
Brinsea Octagon 20 Complete Review
This Egg Incubator is one among the Brinsea’s largest home incubators which is specially designed for the ‘hobby’ chicken-keepers in opposition to the large cabinets which can hold a few lot numbers of dozen eggs.
The Anthropology of Brinsea’s Octagon 20
Octagon 20 is made up of Brinsea Biomaster which is an “antimicrobial plastic” especially designed to limber down the growth of bacteria during the incubation process. And as a hatching-addict, I know that bacterial infection is considered to account at least 25% of the unsuccessful hatches. This effective incubator can hold up to 24 chicken eggs, and yes the device is flexible enough to hatch any bird eggs; ranging from the small quail eggs to goose eggs.
The incubator is like no other common device but has an autonomous featuring ability to maintain the consistent levels of humidity and Warmth, which make this product loved by the exotic bird’s breeders.
This is not a still air incubator but a circulated one, the warm air is continuously spread around the cabinet with an efficient fan system that is contained in the lid. So, you can easy get rid of all the stress related to the Hatching work. There are no hot or cold spots and every egg will be provided with an average warmth and same temperature.
The device is a user-friendly one where you can use this as a manual Hatcher or an automatic machine that contains an auto-turn cradle and you don’t have to toss your eggs every now and then. You can go completely stress-free by adding on a humidity pump to the machine to control the moisture levels as well. Yea, this will be a little costly process but yes you worth it.
Who will need this incubator the most?
This device is fit for all those who are in the procedure and planning to hatch more than 6 to 7 chicken eggs. The hatchers who have the money to afford for this upgraded incubator. Octagon 20 has made the incubation process fully automatic and if you plan to add the auto-turner cradle and humidity pump, this incubator is fantastic for the completely automatic hatching procedure. Yes, indeed a product worth buying.
The Easy handling makes it a must buy!
The eggs can be easily set on the end, instead of flat as it is in the Mini Advance, so it is required that you make sure to keep the pointed end faces in the downward direction.
If you’re using the humidity pump or the auto-turner, the electrical lead fits perfectly well into the incubator head. If it does not, then fill the trenches of the machine at bottom. It’s almost a kid’s play to set the digital display to measure the temperature and moisture level, though it completely depends on when you want the eggs to cool down each day.
The added turning cradle turns the direction of the eggs once an hour and it is done very smoothly as it fully mimics a mother hen for keeping the eggs moving so that the embryo does not stick to the walls of the egg.
The main thing that you need to keep in mind is to switch-off the machine from the auto-turn cradle on day 18; eggs should not be turned at this moment of time. To completely do this, all you need to do is simply lift the eggs off and set them on any flat surface.
Once the process is done- you can easily relax and wait for hatch day!
4 Mind-blowing Features of Brinsea’s Octagon 20
- These are the features what separates this device from any other smaller incubators is the ability to control temperature and humidity levels. This machinery behaves unlikely to other incubators which tend to lose control if the outside temperature is low.
- The digital read-out clearly indicates the temperature or moisture levels that make the process go fine till the very end. The only feature that it doesn’t accommodate is to count down the days.
- The flexibility to add a humidity pump or an auto-turner makes it different from any other egg-incubator in this range. This add-on feature can keep the evaporation levels consistent, though it’s a little expensive to do this. All this add-ons can drastically reduce your stress levels as it did to mine.
- Keeping the incubators clean in between the hatching process is a bit critical to keep all the bacterial infections at bay, and the Octagon 20 apart from all the electrical elements it can be easily cleaned.
What about the drawbacks?
Are there any drawbacks of Brinsea’s Octagon 20? Yes, unfortunately there are some. It’s not easy to see inside the machine while the eggs are in the hatching process in comparison to the smaller Brinsea Mini Advance. The fan and moisture control into the hatching chamber makes the space for the chicks a little less and this also hampers the available viewing space.
This machine is quite big and auto-turner cradle measures 17″ (43 cm) wide by 10″ (25.5 cm) deep. The device is not that cheap and if you add on with an auto-turner cradle the cost would be around $500.
If I talk of my own personal experience, Brinsea have now solved out all those early problems and I can surely say that it is extremely reliable. Though all the other reviews talk about the device being not reliable, but after using this I am telling to ignore all the other fake reviews.
